What I Do

My name is Andy Jennings and I’m a drum teacher from York.

I offer expert drum kit tuition and workshops to schools, privately in my home studio, and corporately to businesses in the York area. Lessons are designed to focus on what the individual needs and cover a wide range of musical genres; from rock bands to orchestras and everything in between. Complete beginners to advanced, players of all ages at a pace to suit.

About Me

I have been fortunate enough to have toured central Europe extensively and to have played as far afield as America, Canada and Mexico.

I’ve played in venues from Murrayfield to Shepherds Bush Empire to Leeds and Reading Festivals, supporting artists such as Bryan Adams, Kings of Leon, Paulo Nutini and Elbow. I also have TV and radio experience and have played live sessions on Radio 1 (Maida Vale Studios), Radio 2, XFM London and XFM Manchester

Exams

Under my guidance students will have the opportunity to take Rock School examinations.

These instrumental qualifications are recognised by colleges/universities and introduce students to a variety of different ‘popular’ styles of music. Don’t be put off by the ‘Rock’ in Rock School as it’s a syllabus that covers a wide range of genres and provides a great introduction on how to play them. I have entered students for over 250 exams to date and am pleased to boast an exceptional pass rate.

Exams can work as a great motivational tool for some students and not so well for others. I will offer guidance to make sure we arrive at the right decision for the individual, but providing the student is interested, motivated and keen to improve generally, if they decide they don’t want to take an exam, that’s fine too. What my customers think…

Andy is a rare & top class teacher. He knows where you’re at and helps you to the next step with patience and knowledge. My daughter loves going to every lesson and is being introduced to a vast range of styles of fantastic music. You can’t get anything like this in a normal school day so highly recommend it as the perfect antidote/adjunct to any hectic curriculum. Super organised, quick to respond, professional music-loving fun – if you want to learn to play the drums, you couldn’t ask for more.

Andy has the ability to communicate and engage with students with a diverse range of abilities and learning needs. My son has difficulty concentrating but managed to stay focused in a 40min drumming lesson which was a huge achievement for him. Andy strikes the right balance of variety, explanation, demonstration, humour, firmness, expectation of progress and enthusiasm for music. Andy is always prepared to provide honest and constructive feedback and advice to parents either by email or phone. This enabled us to remain fully in touch with our son’s progress and learning needs.  I think that Andy clearly respects the talents and achievements of all of those he teaches. Andy is very friendly, flexible and well organised and I would highly recommend him as a music teacher.

Andy taught our son Ethan from Grade 1 through 8. Incredibly this journey started at primary school when he was 8 years old, continued through high school in the UK to year 9. When we immigrated to New Zealand, Grade 8 lessons continued over Skype which proved very successful and he attained high merit that year. This was achieved despite the 12 hour time difference. This story signifies two unique things about Andy. 1) His ability to build a strong connection with his students where they just want to continue with him. They do this because he works at their level, believes in them and both encourages and challenges. 2) His unwavering dedication to the child’s success and enjoyment of the instrument.  We can’t recommend him highly enough.

My boys have both loved learning to play the drums in school with Andy over the past few years. They are totally different in the way that they learn, but he adapts the lesson to their individual needs, so that they both progress and feel confident in what they can do. They enjoy the tasks that he sets and are always keen to practice so they can impress him in the next lesson. Thanks Andy – I’ve been amazed by how quickly they have progressed and how much they look forward to their lessons!
